Graveside services for Sylvia Shuttles Ogletree, 87, Ben Wheeler, were held Friday, July 8 at Hillcrest Cemetery, Canton, with Rev. Steve Glossup officiating, under the direction of Hilliard Funeral Home, Van.

Mrs. Ogletree died on July 5, 2016 at her home.

She was born Oct. 12, 1928 in Dallas to the late Robert Hall Shuttles and Lila Cox Shuttles. She worked as a nurse and taught art therapy to patients at Terrell State Hospital. Sylvia was a talented artist and lover of all animals. She practiced and taught ceramics, tole painting and designed and made china dolls. Over the years, Sylvia raised many animals, including dogs, birds and fish. As a child she visited her grandparents, Dr. Marion Love Cox and Millie “Coxie” Cox in Canton and loved riding horses in the country. She later made the Canton-area her home with her children. She was preceded in death by her husband, Terrell Ogletree.

Survivors include her son, John Slaughter of Abilene; two daughters, Pat Brown and husband, Barry of Canton and Marianne Ashby of Ben Wheeler; sister, Marion Foree of Tucson, Ariz.; two granddaughters, Melissa Lea Brown of Dallas and Meagan Ann Deen and husband, Luke of Canton; great-granddaughter, Emily Ann Deen; three nephews, Grady Foree, Stephen Foree and Norman Foree and niece, Ann Hamilton.
