Social resources for seniors bountiful

The complications of aging can dramatically impact one’s ability to live independently. Certain activities – such as healthcare, nutrition and transportation – that once presented no problem may no longer be so easy to navigate.

Fortunately, there are a plethora of free services available to help seniors better enjoy their golden years.

Everyone knows of the benefits offered by Social Security and Medicare / Medicaid. Retirement at the age of 65 lets you collect from your 401K or Pension Plan without penalty. Social Security also kicks in. Likewise, senior homeowners often receive substantial property tax exemptions and homestead deductions in many municipalities.

Consult a tax professional for advice on receiving maximum benefits.

Many other governmental assistance programs and means of support at the State and Federal level are less well known.

For example, many Second World War and Korean War veterans do not know that they can receive more than $2,100 a month in Aid and Attendance benefits that can be used for Assisted Living. To qualify they must have served in the military during a specified wartime period. Surviving spouses may also qualify for these benefits. To learn more about eligibility requirements contact your local Veteran’s Administration office or visit www.va.gov.

The Senior Health Insurance Assistance Program is a free counseling service for Medicare recipients. It is an independent program funded by Federal agencies and administered at the State level to help seniors, their loved ones and caregivers make informed healthcare decisions. Anyone eligible for Medicare is eligible for free SHIP counseling.
