This Week in Canton History...

Canton Herald – Sept. 8, 1960:

The 1960 version of Canton High School Majorette section of the band was seen for the first time last Friday night Forney football game. They are Martha Heard, Annell Zuspann, Georgann Reese, Drum major was on Yvoone Shatley, Ann Norman, Jane Groves, and Carolyn Marvin . A prettier bunch cannot be found in high school circles.

This and That? - Marvin Shaw won first prize in Ross Auto’s Fishing Contest which ended Aug.31. Shaw pulled in a 7 lb. 2 oz. bass during the contest to take the honors. Second place went to Marvin Pittman with a 6 ½ pound bass, while Alvin Norman took third honors with a 6 lb. 4 oz. fish. From the looks of the size of the fish there must be some fishing holes around Canton they are not telling us about.

Mr. and Mrs. N. W. McNorton will be honored Sunday, Sept. 11, from 2 to 4 p.m. with open house at their home, 215 E. Jordan in Grand Saline in observance of their Golden wedding anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. McNorton were married Sept. 11, 1910 at the Mount Lebanon Baptist Church. They lived in the Mount Lebanon community until 1932 when they moved to Grand Saline. Mr. McNorton is retired from the Morton Sale Company.           

Mrs. Kenneth Ray Vowell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Forest Warren, left Dallas by plane last week for Munich Germany. She joined her husband who is stationed there with the 91st transportation company.

Services will be held today (Thursday) in the purposes for Mrs. Ettie Cora Hardegree, 78, at 2 p. m. at the Colfax Methodist church.  Rev. Raymond Bukhair and Rev. Edwin Ray conducted the services. Mrs. Hardegree, who was a native of the Little Hope Moore community passed away in Terrell Wednesday by Sept. 7. Mrs. Hardegree was born June 17, 1892 in the Moore community and married W. M. Hardegree, who preceded her in death in 1950, she was a longtime member of the Methodist Church was a member of the Colfax Methodist church at the time of her death.
