Canton Herald – October 13, 1960: The Van Zandt County Farm Bureau will hold its annual convention Monday night, October 17, at 7:30 p.m. Guest speaker for the occasion will be Bob Lilly, legislative director for the Texas Farm Bureau. Mr. Lilly will speak on “How Farm Bureau Gets Things Done in Legislative Matters.”
The purpose of the convention is to draw up resolutions. Adoption or rejection of resolutions is decided by majority vote. Adopted resolutions which pertain to County issues become the official policy of the County organization. Resolutions which are concerned with state and national matters become instructions to the delegates to the state convention. The number of voting delegates to this convention is decided by the number of Farm Bureau members within the County.
“Every farmer should come to this convention and discover for himself the working of Farm Bureau in legislative matters,” stated Haskell Miracle, president of the County organization.”
Last rites were held for Fred Davis Jenkins, 74, Saturday afternoon, Oct. 8 at the Ben Wheeler Methodist church. Mr. Jenkins was born Feb. 5, 1886 in Mississippi and passed away Oct. 7 in a Tyler hospital. He was married to Alice Pearl Nixon own December 24, 1908. Rev. Carl Brown and Rev. W. T. Hewitt officiated at the last rites. Interment was at Holly Springs Cemetery. Eubank funeral home was in charge of arrangements.
Richard L. Loughmiller of Canton enjoyed special honors this week as one of the top 13 salesman of 1964 World Book Encyclopedia and Child Craft during the company’s annual sales conference in Chicago. Loughmiller, a district sales manager, was presented with a cash award by Bailey K. Howard, president of the educational publishing firm.
