The Great I am

Life is filled with challenges

Every day there are needs

His hand is always ready

The heart in faith He feeds

Father God is the final answer

To supply our ever need

The Great I am he said He is

He supplies with greatest speed

He is the greatest store house

Jesus is the only key

By Him we find the permission

His blood has set us free

He set us free from death to life

When the final act was done

Could only be by the Son of God

He truly speaks I am the one

Praise Him today and always

Give Him your soul and heart

Our need in life and daily care

He says these are my part.

Cool off with a trip to the Library

Hot! Hot! Hot! It's August in Texas. Fortunately, we have things to cool us down: swimming or playing in the sprinkler, going to a movie, shopping in a mall, or, if your pocketbook is running low, come to the library.

There are lots of things to do that cost you nothing. New books come in often, so look for your favorite authors on the New Release kiosks. Or sign up to be a volunteer. You might make a difference in someone's day or make a friend for life.

This week's volunteer profile features a young man who will be a junior at Canton High School this fall. Austin Lomas will soon turn 17, which would officially classify him as a Junior Volunteer; but there is nothing junior about him. Having worked with him this summer during Summer Reading, he is willing to do whatever is asked: taking photos, handing out door-prize tickets to children, making a list of winners for the paper and moving carts of books that have been returned.

Mayor answers First Monday alcohol questions

Recently a local pastor questioned me about the possibility of alcohol sales on the First Monday grounds should the alcohol initiatives pass this November:

“You mentioned (in article of 6-26-2016) that alcohol will not be at first Monday, even if this passes. Does that mean it cannot ever be there because the city of Canton cannot allow any of their vendors to ever sell alcohol at first Monday? Or does it mean that there is a future legal way for the city owned properties at first Monday to have alcohol permits, but they just do not have them now?

My concern is that if the alcohol initiative passes, there will be alcohol (sales) at first Monday. Is there a way for first Monday to never have alcohol (sales)?”

The Problem with ‘Blue Lives Matter’

The murder of police officers is a terrible tragedy, but most Americans already believe that cops’ lives matter.

tragedy. Police shootings of black men in Minnesota, Louisiana, and beyond. A mass shooting of police officers in Dallas.
Yet this surplus of tragedy seems to have created some confusion. So let’s clear things up.

August

Summer is here, the sun is so very hot.

You could fry an egg on most any spot.

The fishing and trips to the beach are fun.

On the other hand, working is no fun in the sun.

God made the different seasons, some can be extreme.

The bitter cold in winter makes summer feel a dream.

We really are blessed no matter the season.

Our control heat and air keep us comfortable within reason.

August means the year is more than half gone.

The older we get the faster the years keep moving on.

Next year if you have ice and snow and if you want it to stop,

Remember hot old August, we wanted rain but not a drop.

The Lord has control of time and the season,

We complain, but know that is the only way and reason.

Even when August is hot more uncomfortable then the rest.

Many things we have to be thankful for we are very blessed.

Volunteers help run the library

Courtesy photo
Lacy Elliott working the circulation desk as she volunteers at the library.

We at the library want to spotlight the people who volunteer their time to help the librarians keep the library running smoothly.

This week, Lacy Elliott is featured.

Lacy has been a volunteer for nine months. After 25 years of homeschooling her children, she decided to “give back to the library after 15 years of my children terrorizing the library!”

Lacy, besides teaching, has some college experience and works in the children’s department at church. As a farm owner, she sells cattle and hay; also she trains horses and is a riding instructor.

Lacy, who describes volunteering as a blessing, works eight hours a week. Her duties include wrapping, labeling, shelving and repairing books; also, she assists patrons and issues new library cards. Her favorite part of the work is helping patrons and staff. She describes the staff as “very patient and helpful in teaching her the needed skills.”

This week in Canton history...

CANTON HERALD- Aug 4, 1960:

Van Zandt County’s Commissioners Court is expected to order a $1 million road bond election Friday morning at a called meeting. The court received petitions calling for the election and its regular meeting Monday morning. Judge G. D. Stayton estimated that 700 to 800 names appeared on these petitions.  Judge Stayton told the Herald Wednesday morning that in all probability that the date, which will be set Friday by the court, will be Saturday, September 10. The court has gone on record as saying that the present tax structure of the County will not be affected.

Think inside the box, and you’ll never get lost

My wife needed to find an address on Van Zandt County Road (VZCR) 1224 south of Grand Saline and east of Highway 17. So we built a box. Anything west of Highway 17 (and north of Canton) was in the wrong direction, so we used Highway 17 as the west side of the box. Because Highway 17 makes a turn to the east just south of Grand Saline, Highway 17 became the top of the box. Interstate 20 became the southern boundary of the box. We used Highway 110 from Van to Grand Saline as the east side of the box.

Here’s the principle of the box: As long as you’re inside it, you can’t get lost. As soon as you contact one of the edges of the box, that’s as far as you need to go. Get back inside the box and keep looking! You aren’t really lost as long as you are inside the box, whether you know exactly where you are or not.

Revelation

As we study the book Revelation

Many things we don’t understand

But they are prepared for unbelievers

Who reject Jesus and God’s plan.

When Father God withdrew His spirit

If His power leaves the earth

Life will not be worth the living

Man will surely regret his birth.

Real Revelation but don’t despair

For Jesus our Savior knows it all

He is the answer to every trial

Love Him and never fall.

He is shown riding on a great white horse

His feet don’t touch the ground

He is King and rules forever

Just love and praise God

We are Heaven bound.
