Summer may be ending but things are happening at Library

Now that summer activities are coming to a conclusion, volunteering at the library might be something to think about. There is always something interesting happening.

It's a great way to serve your community and meet interesting people. Also, learning new skills and exploring new ideas is a way to exercise the brain!

Some of the requirements are to have transportation to the library, the ability to communicate clearly with others, and to be able to understand and follow requests.

To be a Junior Volunteer you must be 12 – 17 years of age. At 18 and older, you are an Adult Volunteer.

Come by the circulation desk to pick up an application and one of the librarians or a volunteer will be glad to answer your questions.

Picnic planning for the wise

Perfect picnic for the entire family – no matter what the age

For months, we have been counting the days until Summer.  The wait seemed endless.  Now that we are in the golden glow of the season with months of cookouts and vacations, floppy sun hats and sunscreen ahead of us, it is time to start planning your family outings.  When planning quality time outdoors, you have to consider the needs of each family member and what will work and will not work when celebrating.

With picnicking the top choice for older Americans, there are a few things you can do when planning your outdoor activity to make it more comfortable for those who are older (and wiser) than the rest of us.

This week in Canton history...

CANTON HERALD-July 21, 1960:

The wildest show east of the Pecos is going to be revealed Thursday, Friday and Saturday Nights at the Canton Rodeo Arena, according to reports being released by the Fair Association. That is when the “Western Week” rodeo in Canton will be unreeled before the people of Canton and Van Zandt County.

As Western Week progresses a visitor to Canton can see some of the remains of the old West… For instance have you seen the beard of Alvin Norman, Chili Campbell, Harold Stevens, A. L. Scott, Jr. and Jake Slaughter…Just to name a few of the rough customers.

Harold Stevens, manager of the Canton Farm Products Company told the press he is setting up an old time bar at his firm’s location, offering a slug of cider to anyone visiting it Thursday, Friday or Saturday.

Political corruption and how to stop it

The 2016 primary season for determining the presidential candidates has uncovered numerous areas of political corruption. Both parties are guilty. Both parties have their elites. They wield great power.  They are entrenched in decisions that multiply their wealth. Have you ever noticed that new members of Congress enter with moderate income but leave as multi-millionaires.

The democrats have their super delegates.  Before the primary season had really started, they all pledged their votes for Clinton. Sanders had an almost insurmountable disadvantage to overcome. Clinton had numerous meetings with a few people around a table. Sanders had numerous rallies where thousands attended. He came close but did not make it successfully. He had great support from the voters and won many states where he was not expected to compete.

Texas baby is born with Zika-related microcephaly

AUSTIN — The Texas Department of State Health Services has confirmed a Zika virus infection in a baby recently born with microcephaly in Harris County.

The July 13 report is the first official confirmation of a Zika-related microcephaly case in Texas. According to the agency, the mother traveled from Latin America, where she was likely infected and the baby acquired the infection in utero.

“It’s heartbreaking,” said Texas Department of State Health Services Commissioner John Hellerstedt. “This underscores the damage Zika can have on unborn babies. Our state’s work against Zika has never been more vital.”

DSHS is coordinating with Harris County Public Health and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to follow the case.

A Coming Hour

Father God has set an hour

When all earthly things will end

Mankind will face unrepented sin

But Jesus is still mankind’s best friend.

No power on earth can change it

Only father God himself

He set the hour when Jesus comes

And placed it on a shelf.

He will take it down a pre-set time

Nothing can take its place

Remember Jesus shed his blood

To bring to us God’s grace.

The grace of Father God is precious

By faith it still comes in

Nothing else but Calvary’s Cross

Can still take away our sin.

Time and space has no effect

It is all within God’s power

The one wise thing we can do

Be ready for that great hour.

Walking with Bob

It was June 12, 2006, when I got serious about my lifestyle and health. My blood pressure was down from a high of 205/104, and the weight was down from a high of 254.

In the 1990s I went through the routine of pills for high blood pressure, annual exams, working out at the local Junior College and potting around with every newfangled diet that somebody was peddling. That had been my routine my whole adult life. Other people and constant advertising controlled what I was drinking and eating.

On that June 12, 2006, I had a talk with me. “If it going to be it is up to me. “

Everyone must have water, food, motion, and sleep to live.
