Love, love, love

Children made valentines out of paper hearts at Storytime at VZC Library Feb. 12.

Storytime at VZC Library Feb. 12 was all about Valentines. Children learned about the history of Valentine’s Day while also hearing stories from volunteer reader, Ms. Rhonda, who also read stories from her personal collection of tales.

Badgers, dragons and tacos, Oh My!

There was a full house at VZC Library Storytime Feb. 5.

There was a full house on Friday, Feb. 5 for Storytime at the VZC Library.  The theme for the day was “let’s eat”.  The first book read by Ms. Rhonda was “Badger’s Fancy Feast” by Keiko Kasza.  Badger is tired of eating the same old things so he tries to catch some new food to eat.  First a mole but he was too quick, then a rat, but he was too wiggly, then a rabbit but it hippity-hopped right out of Badger’s hands. Badger was so hungry he screamed “I’m so hungry I could eat a horse” and when a horse heard that he kicked the badger right back to his burrow.  Much to his surprise he found all the good food that he had at his house had been eaten by the animals that he had been trying to eat.

The favorite story was “Dragons Love Tacos” where they learned that even though dragons love tacos they hate spicy toppings. The craft was to make a yummy looking paper taco.  This left everyone with the desire for tacos for lunch.

‘Wash’ off Wednesday’ results in toiletries donations

Courtesy photo
Canton Lion Benja Mize and Canton Lion President Bob Giles display some of the toiletry items donated as part of the club’s “Wash’ off Wednesday.”

On Oct. 18, 2015, the director of the Manna Food Bank spoke to the Canton Lions Club.

She told the club about one couple who came in for food. The husband had been laid off from work. The wife’s arm was in a cast and she was unable to work.  They picked up their food and then saw a shelf with a few toiletries on it.

The wife said, “Oh look, honey.  Soap. We’ll have soap tonight when we bathe the kids.”

I am a single mom and we pinched pennies.  But we always had soap.

This story really bothered me.

I decided that maybe our club could buy soap.  I thought about a project:  If all of our members would give me a dollar a month for three months, we could provide Manna with about 270 toiletry items.
