This week in Canton history...
Mrs. Fugate died Tuesday Afternoon at Baker Clinic, Oct. 11, at 4:15 o’clock, following an illness of several days. Interment was in White Rose Cemetery. Mrs. Fugate was the mother of Mrs. Guy Martin and Calvin Fugate of Canton.
Miss Becky Scott a Board 4H Club member has been selected as Gold Star Girl for Van Zandt County for 1949. Miss Sarah E. Ellenberger assistant county home demonstration agent, announce this week. Her story was selected as the most outstanding by a committee of Home Demonstration and Club women and adult leaders.
On Thursday evening Oct. 6, Mrs. Ted Robertson, recent bride, was complimented with a miscellaneous shower in the home of Mr. and Mrs. E.E. Addy. Those in the house part were Mrs. Geneva Reynolds, Mrs. Jake Slaughter, Mrs. Athol Emerson, Miss Angie Paschall, Mrs. Rudolph Taylor and Miss Beth Shivers.
Mrs. W. H. Corley of near Canton celebrated her 87th birthday Sunday, Oct. 9, with a dinner at her home.
Van, Oct. 12 (Special) Friday Oct. 14, has been declared a school holiday at the Van Independent School in observance of the 20th anniversary of the discovery of the Van Field, according to Superintendent Jesse. E. Rhodes.
All business houses will close their doors at 10 a.m. in order that the employers and employees may attend the Pure Oil Celebration held in the Van Joint Account Camp here in Van.
A large crowd is expected Friday to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Discovery of First Oil Well in Van. (more of this article on microfilm)
Funeral service was held Friday afternoon, Oct. 7, at 2:30 p.m. for William Pitt Nixon.
