This week in Canton history...
Canton Herald, Nov. 17, 1949:
Verlon Carey, Canton and Miss Becky Scott of Board, were awarded Gold Stars Nov. 9 for outstanding
4-H Club work. Twelve girls and 19 boys were given other county awards as part of the National
4-H Achievement Week program held in the Legion Hut at Canton.
The Van Zandt County Rural Teachers Association met Thursday night at 7 o’clock in the district court room. Mrs. Theresa Carrol director of elementary education in the state department was speaker. Before she received her present position on Oct. 1, 1948, Mrs. Carrol was co-supervisor in Kaufman and Galveston counties. This summer she attended the conference at the U S. office of education in Washington on School Life. From this meeting she went to Daytona, Fla. for the committee meeting of the Southern Association of Elementary Education. The faults that this committee found in our elementary education system were: Classes too large, poor libraries, desks to large and old building. New schools are now starting on the elementary building first. What is needed now is evaluation in terms of equipment, days and textbooks but also a program of school life. Teachers need continuous training and study of changing needs and concept of what should be.
Funeral services were held Monday evening, Nov. 14, at 3 o’clock at the Oakland Baptist church for John H. Wheeler, who died Sunday evening at 6 o’clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Loretta Olson, in Dallas. Rev. R. P. Campbell of Ennis conducted the services, assisted by Rev. Joe Johnson and Richard Ausburn of Dallas. Mr. Wheeler was born in Freestone county Feb. 13, 1878 and moved to Van Zandt when a young boy. He was married to Nora Stephens, Dec. 16, 1900, at Canton. To them eight children were born.
