This week in Canton history...

  CANTON HERALD, Feb. 9, 1950: 

A total of 5,291 poll tax receipts were issued by the county tax assessor-collector office for this ear.  This is an increase of 2,147 paid receipts over last year.  In the last election year, 1948 the total poll tax receipts issued totaled 5,881.

There are approximately1,500 more persons able to vote according to Jimmy Dennard of the collector’s office.  These are person over 65 years of age and those voting for the first time.  

The county tax valuation has increased from $28,529,100.87 in 1948, to $29,143,799.80 in 1949 a gain of $614,698.93.

Thirteen candidates have announced for office through the Herald.  This election year promises to be one of the hottest political campaigns in the history of the county.

The Canton School board awarded the general contract for construction of the new school building, totaling $123,000 to Oscar L. Chapman of Hutchins last Wednesday night.  The electrical contract was awarded the week before to the Johnson Electric Co. of Longview for $8,146 and the plumbing contract was awarded to Charles Wilson of Gainesville for $15, 949.29.

The structures will be of one story brick veneer buildings and will consist of an elementary plant of twelve classrooms and a gymnasium with a seating capacity of approximately 700, according to Superintendent H. H. Riley.  Work will begin as soon as the weather permits and calls for 225 working days.
