Canton Herald- May 12, 1960:
In the county-wide race incumbent Sheriff J. W. (Jew) Burnett polled the voters to win re-election to a second term his opponent John T. Trant of Van polled 838 while Barnett carried 31 of the 32 voting precincts in VZC. Trant carried the Edgewood box. The only other local race Leonard Dawson was re-elected as Constable of Precinct 1 over his opponent David Risner. Dawson polled 392 votes to Risner’s 334.
James F. Lambert Canton died in a Terrell hospital Monday morning. Services were held Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock, the Rev. D. S. Neal and the Rev. Edwin Ray officiated. Interment was in High Cemetery. James Floyd Lambert was born Oct. 27, 1896, in Van Zandt County. He lived his entire life on the farm on which he was born until a few years ago when he moved to Canton. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and a veteran of World War I.
Survivors include one brother W. A. Lambert, Terrell, one sister, Mrs. Dora Pirtle of Canton and one uncle, Jesse McCaffity of Canton and aunt, Mrs. Ada Stone of Canton.
The eighth grade graduating class will hold its graduation exercises Thursday night, May 19, at 7:30 p.m. in the school gymnasium. The invocation will be given by L. E. Carpenter, Minister of the local Church of Christ. The salutatorian address will be given by Bill Mitchell, presentation of the key will be made by Lynn Casey and Judy Etheridge with Martha Lynn Scott and Linda Neal Dozier receiving the key. Billy Montgomery will deliver the valedictorian address. Jimmy Eubanks, class president will introduce the speaker. The Rev. Donald C. Brown, pastor of the first Baptist Church who will bring the graduation address. The Rev. Edwin Ray, pastor of the Presbyterian Church will give the benediction. Presentation of the certificates will be by J. L. Heard grade school principal Mary Jan Heard will play the processional and the recessional.
Class honor students are Billy Montgomery, Bill Mitchell, Martha Lynn Scott, Linda Dozier, Michael Mahaffey, Jerry Rosemond, Alicia Fitzgerald, Georgia Reese, Ronnie Seale, Anita Harrell, Jeffery Whatley, Ann Norman, Jimmy Eubank and Billy Jack Peace.
