This week in Canton history...
Canton Herald - May 26, 1960:
The preliminary census report for the city of Canton released this week by Paul H. Jameson, census district supervisor of Tyler showed Canton with a 1960 population of 1,110. This is an increase of 229 over the 1950 This Week In Canton History census report. In 1950 Canton had a population of 881. In an early release from the office of Mr. Jameson, the population figure for panel was listed at 718 age of decrease of 163 people from the 1950 report. The early report was an era on the part of Mr. Jamison and was corrected to 1,110. The 1960 population given for Van Zandt County was 18,485 showing a big decline since the 1950 census. The 1950 census report listed Van Zandt County with 22,593, more than 4,000 people then now living in the county. All towns and cities in Van Zandt County showed an increase in population while the rural areas lost population. The preliminary census figures are believed to be substantially correct according to Mr. Jameson’s report, but are subject to revision after the returns from non-residents are credited to their proper locality other routine checks have been made. Next time although a significant revision is unlikely, minor revisions may possibly occur after careful examination of the returns. The official announcement of population for Canton and Van Zandt County will be made at a later date by the director of the Bureau of the Census.
