CANTON HERALD- Aug 4, 1960:
Van Zandt County’s Commissioners Court is expected to order a $1 million road bond election Friday morning at a called meeting. The court received petitions calling for the election and its regular meeting Monday morning. Judge G. D. Stayton estimated that 700 to 800 names appeared on these petitions. Judge Stayton told the Herald Wednesday morning that in all probability that the date, which will be set Friday by the court, will be Saturday, September 10. The court has gone on record as saying that the present tax structure of the County will not be affected.
Last rites for John Henry Walker were held at Holly Springs on Wednesday, Aug. 3, at 2 p.m. Mr. Walker passed away Aug. 1 in Altus, Okla.. He was born July 26, 1892, near Athens, Ala. He was a member of the Methodist Church in the Watts Community, having joined in 1926 he was married to Miss Marty Howell in April, 1914. Rev. Royce Rob and Rev. Kelly Moseley officiated at the service.
Old Bethel-Mrs. Riley and children of Dallas spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Stout. Betty remained for a more extended visit with her grandparents.
Mr. and Mrs. Jim Flatt Mr. and Mrs. B Downing and Mrs. Oree Foster attended the revival at Elm Grove last week.
Mrs. Floyd Stout spent the weekend with the Gilbert Stouts in Greenville they are the parents of a baby girl born July 30.
Wedding Announcement - Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Wilkerson, Route 2, Canton, announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter Joyce, to Leroy Crabtree, son of Mr. and Mrs. N. C. Crabtree of Route 2, Canton. The couple will be married Friday evening, Aug. 12, at 8 o’clock at Little Hope Baptist Church.
Cradle roll – Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Stout now announce the arrival of a seven pound daughter in a Greenville Hospital July 30. She has been named Cynthia Denise. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. R. F. Chamblee and Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Stout.
