Declarations, agreements fill agenda for commissioners

The county commissioners took to business Oct. 11, officially declaring October as Domestic Violence Abuse Month and also declaring Nov. 12 as First Responders Day. East Texas Crisis Center representative Crystal Mayer asked the commissioners to officially recognize Canton Fire Captain Brian Horton as the recipient of the HOPE award, an award that highlights the efforts of an individual to combat domestic violence. Crystal Mayer presented the award to Capt. Horton and also asked commissioners to declare October as domestic violence abuse month.

Judge Don Kirkpatrick then read a proclamation declaring October as domestic violence abuse month. In a similar matter, the commissioners also approved an event permit for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18. A candlelight vigil will be held at the VZC courthouse for domestic violence awareness. The event is sponsored by the ETCC and the VZC Criminal District Attorney’s office. Mayer said that there would be 158 candles that would be lit, representing the 158 victims of domestic violence in Texas in 2015.

First Responders Day

Attorney Joshua Wintters asked the commissioners to designate Nov. 12 as First Responders Day in VZC.

Wintters said that a banquet with a five-star dinner would be held along with entertainment. Wintters said that “there would be approximately 800 to 1,000 people attending the dinner.” The dinner would be held at the Canton Civic Center and all first responders are offered free admission.
