Texas State Senator Bob Hall reads a proclamation after presenting a Texas flag to Lace Deibert, the Texas Bank and Trust Vice-President and Canton Branch Manager, congratulating the bank on the opening of their new location on Highway 19 in Canton.
An almost six-month remodeling project was nearing the end for what was supposed to be a new-look Texas Bank and Trust facility at 231 East Tyler Street in downtown Canton before a tragic event occurred that changed everything.
Shortly after 6:30 p.m. Friday, May 1, 2015, an electrical fire broke out in the building ruining the ceiling and destroying all the electrical units in the facility.
“I was traveling to Dallas that evening and I received a phone call from our bank vice-president, Harold Holyfield, who informed me about the fire,” recalled Lace Deibert, Texas Bank and Trust Vice-President and Canton Branch Manager. “I thought he was kidding me at first. I could not believe it. Harold and a couple of contractors who were working on the roof and the air conditioning units were in the building at the time of the fire and thankfully, they got out okay. There was nobody injured in the fire.”
After receiving the news, Deibert headed back to the scene of the fire in Canton and met with the facilities manager of Texas Bank and Trust.
“I was on a conference call from the bank drive-thru at 11 p.m. that night with officials from Texas Bank and Trust,” said Deibert. “The drive-thru did not suffer any damage in the fire. We met to try to figure what our next move would be. This was the first time that any of the Texas Bank and Trust facilities had suffered a fire.”
Bank officials were made aware of a building next door that might be available for lease and contacted the realtor.
