Memorial services for Maefayr Mitchell Hooton, 89, of Martins Mill, were held Monday, Jan. 2, 2017, under the direction of Eubank Funeral Home in Canton. Interment followed at Holly Springs Cemetery in Martins Mill. She passed away Dec. 28, 2016.
Mrs. Hooton was born May 21, 1927, in Martins Mill to Verbie Selke and Richard Lucien Mitchell. She graduated from Martins Mill and attended Texas State College for Women, now TWU, until she met and married the love of her life, Sherrill Aubrey Hooten.
She was passionate about two things, her family and Martins Mill. She was instrumental in helping create the picture wall of history at the Martins Mill store and researching and requesting for several of the historical markers in the Martins Mill area.
She is proceeded in death by her husband, Sherrill; her parents; and siblings, Tom Prestridge, Helen Barber, Leon Mitchell, DD Mitchell and Lucien Mitchell.
Survivors include her children, Richard Lucien Hooten and Sherri Hooton Doss; grandchildren, Jon Hooten, Shelby Hooten, Bryce Doss and Baylen Doss; she was known as Aunt Polly to her nieces and nephews, Gwen Mitchell, Jeannine Morris, Jacquelyn Thompson, Errol Barber, David Barber, Gerald Mitchell and Steve Mitchell; 16 great-nieces and nephews and their families.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Martins Mill ISD or Holly Springs Cemetery.
