CANTON HERALD, May 12, 1949: At the annual commencement exercises of the southwestern Baptist Seminary, held in Fort Worth on May 6, the degree of Doctor of Theology was conferred upon Scott L. Tatum, formerly pastor of the Baptist churches at Canton and Hubbard, and at present time pastor of the Hyde Park Baptist Church in Austin. He is a graduate of Mansfield high school and Baylor University.

Wilson Cager Dowell, father of Mrs. Cliff Kellam of the Colfax community, died at his home at Golden Tuesday, May 3. He was born in Wood County on July 8, 1870, and had reached the age of 78 years at the time of his death. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, May 4, at 3 o'clock at Golden Baptist church under the direction of Eubank Bros. Rev. Frank Everett and Rev. E.L. Mixon conducted the last rites and burial was in Sand Springs Cemetery. On January 14, 1900, Mr. Dowell was married to Ada Burleson who survives with four children, Mrs. Kellam of Colfax, Mrs. E.K. Shellenberger of Dallas, Henry Dowell and Truman Dowell. Two brothers, Johnny Dowell of Greenville and Robert Dowell of Golden and six grandchildren also survive.

Lloyd and Floyd Crabtree, SN, were honored with a picnic at Myrtle Springs Park May 1. Lloyd and Floyd Crabtree have just returned from duty in China. They serve aboard the U.S.S. Sierra, now in San Diego, Calif. They are the sons of Mr. and Mrs. R.C. Crabtree of Brownsboro, formerly of Canton. (more on this lengthy article on microfilm)

Mr. and Mrs. George Yates moved last Saturday to their new home on highway 64 west of town. They have made their home in Wills Point for the past several years but resided here before moving to Wills Point.

The Turner church building will be sold at auction to the person offering highest sealed bid. Bids will be received by Ernest Loughmiller, Les Denny Henry Dixon, Oscar Martin and Joe Lamb.
