Powerlifters open season in Sulphur Springs

 

A small contingent of Canton lifters hit the road Jan. 12, opening the 2019 season at the Sulphur Springs Invitational Meet. Canton’s girls team placed 12th overall as a team at the event out of 25 competing schools while the boys team placed 16th overall out of 20 competing schools.

Individual girls results included:

-114 lb. weight class: Carla Perez, second place, 595 lbs. lifted

Eaglettes climb to third in rankings

 

 

The Canton Eaglettes have been virtually automatic on the hardwood during the 2018-’19 season, stringing together victories at a dizzying pace.

That success has continued into district play with the Eaglettes scoring victories over both Brownsboro and Mabank over the past week to run their season record to a sterling 25-1 mark.

Eagles bookend holiday with wins

The Canton Eagles wrapped up non-district play with a 53-41 win over the Kerens Bobcats Jan. 4. The Eagles will start their playoff push in earnest this week, traveling to Mabank Jan. 11 before returning home to face Van Jan. 15.

The Canton Eagles notched a pair of wins in recent weeks, upping their season record to 16-7 overall by topping with victories over both Ferris and Alba-Golden.

Canton wrapped up its pre-Christmas schedule in Ferris Dec. 21, taking home a 57-40 win over the Yellowjackets.

The Eagles appeared to be on their way to a lopsided win in the contest, racing out to a 19-5 lead over Ferris. The gap between the two teams remained virtually unchanged throughout the second quarter as Ferris edged Canton 10-9 to pull to within 28-15 entering the half.

Defense propels Eaglettes to key wins

Hannah Manry (center) was named as this year's Chenevert Holiday Tournament MVP and teammates Mattie Tullos and Olivia Norrell were named to the All-Tournament Team after helping the Eaglettes win this year's event championship.

 

 

The Canton Eaglettes had little time to rest over the recent Christmas holiday, making their way east to Tyler Dec. 27-29 to compete at the 13th annual Macy Chenevert Holiday Tournament.

Canton also competed in the Chenevert Holiday Classic in 2017, scoring wins over Mt. Pleasant, Grace Community and All Saints before falling just short in the championship game against Gilmer to finish second overall in a loaded field of talented opponents.

Eagles cap busy stretch with 4-2 mark

 

 

 

The Canton Eagles had their hands full last week, taking on Caddo Mills in non-district play before hitting the court five times over the course of three days at the Mewbourn Invitational Tournament in Martins Mill. Despite the heavy workload, Canton put together several strong performances against solid competition to finish the week with a 4-2 record overall.

The Eagles opened play against the Caddo Mills Foxes Dec. 11, riding a strong first half to a 56-42 win.

Eaglettes continue red-hot start to season

Olivia Norrell scored a team-high 29 points over the past week, helping the Eaglettes defeat Dalals Christian and Venus in successive non-district contests.

The Canton Eaglettes have been tough to handle during the early part of the 2018-'19 season,  running their season record to a sterling 17-1 mark last week with a pair of home wins over both Dallas Christian and Venus in non-district action.

Canton would run its season-long winning streak to 13 games overall Dec. 11, scoring a 40-28 victory over the visiting Lady Chargers.

JV, freshman teams top Bullard

The Canton basketball program enjoyed a breakout day on the court against Bullard with all three high school teams, the varsity, JV and freshman, all earning wins over the Panthers Nov. 27.

Canton's freshman squad opened the sweep of Bullard in impressive fashion, riding a shut down defensive effort in the second quarter to a 46-28 win over the Panthers.

Four players registered at least two points each in the first quarter, allowing the Eagles to take a 10-8 lead over Bullard.

JV Eaglettes move to 11-1

Canton’s JV Green team finished as runners-up of the LaPoynor Tournament last weekend, going 3-1 overall at the event, improving their season record to 11-1 in the process.

The Canton JV Green basketball team is still a work in progress and a lot of fun to watch. They are an unselfish group of girls that are willing to do whatever it takes for the team to succeed.

The girls finished up this past weekend at the LaPoynor JV Basketball Tournament. They competed well and are finding out that when a challenge presents itself they are able to come together to meet that challenge. 

They matched up with Robert E. Lee 9th A team in the first game and it was a battle but the Canton team pulled away in the second half to win the game 40-23.

Eaglettes win Athens Tournament title

The Canton Eaglettes went a perfect 5-0 at the Hornet Invitational Tournament in Athens last week, outscoring opponents by an average of 18 points per game en route to the championship.

The Canton Eaglettes, ranked 8th overall among all 4A teams in the state according to the most recent Texas Girls Coaches Association Weekly Rankings, continued to impress last week, going a perfect 5-0 at the Hornet Invitational Tournament to push their overall season record to 10-1 overall.

Canton was red-hot in their first game of the event, rolling to a 43-4 halftime lead over Onalaska en route to a dominating 61-17 win over the Wildcats Nov. 29.

Eagles place third at Shelnutt Invitational

The Canton Eagles were kept plenty busy over the past week, hitting the court four times overall with a home game against Bullard Nov. 27 and a trip to Edgewood Nov. 29-Dec. 1 for the 52nd annual Jack Shellnutt Invitational Tournament. Canton finished the week with a 3-1 mark overall, losing just once overall to eventual Shellnutt Invitational champion Commerce.

The Eagles opened their week on a winning note, defending their home court with a 65-47 win against the Bullard Panthers.
