Walking With Bob
Van spirit is contagious
May 2015 is a month that will long be remembered. It began with rain and severe storms and has not stopped. Things are not normal. Last week was Career Day at the local Elementary school. I spent 10 minutes with each of the kindergarten, first and second grade classes, seven groups of the greatest audiences I have ever had. Along with writing about health and wellness, I am on the radio with Bee Fit Tips about seven times daily. The kids were fascinated with my Cape and Bee ears and the name Bee Fit Bob. The all helped record a few bits and understood more about smart phone technology than me. The message of WATER, FOOD, WALK and SLEEP was received and put into action. Seven groups stood up, ran in place for thirty seconds, took really deep breaths and yawned loudly. If every child and adult in North America did the WAFOWASL three or four times a day , the obesity and type two Sugar Diabetes epidemic would be over. Oh, were we under severe storm warnings and the teachers were calmly doing what great teachers do.
That Sunday night, a very bad tornado hit the city of Van just east of here. There were two people killed, 43 injured, 220 homes damaged and 90 destroyed. Two of the schools were probably damaged beyond repair. The headline read “VAN SPIRIT CAN’T BE WRECKED.” The tornado destroyed the property but not the people. When the sun came up the County Judge opened daylight with prayer for wisdom and everybody knew what needed to be done and how to work around the rain and winds.
A week later with storm warnings, a 5K in honor of Cancer Survivors was held in Grand Saline. The Cancer Survivors opened the race with prayer for Van. They were collecting needed items for Van. The rain waited.
