A Memorial Day salute

Remembering the fallen, honoring those who currently serve, and memorializing those who remain lost was on the agenda of the Memorial Day Ceremony in Canton at the Van Zandt County Veterans Memorial May 25.

Canton Mayor Lou Ann Everett emceed the event with Major Brigadier General Howard N. Palmer Jr. serving as the guest speaker.

Many Veterans from the branches of military were on hand to witness the memorial.

Soldiers from World War II, the Korean, Iraq and Afghanistan wars were all present to pay their respects.

All veterans were honored with a special thanks going out to those who served in World War II.

The Canton Police Honor Guard and the 19th Regiment of the Texas State Guard provided a 21 gun salute and raised the American flag.

Community support was also noticed in the large turnout of county residents and officials.

Edgewood City Council member BJ Pendelton, her husband, Jack and mother, Dorothy Hall along with Stephen Goode and his wife, Mariam were present.

Precinct 2 County Commissioner Virgil Melton Jr and his wife, Janice also demonstrated their reverence for those who have served. Melton himself is a veteran.

Student art contest winners were announced. A handful of students attended the event and got to show off their military appreciation artwork.
