This week in Canton history...

CANTON HERALD,   June 23, 1949:

Saturday afternoon a lovely shower was given in the home of Dr. and Mrs. T.R. Keahey honoring Miss Julia Frances Loughmiller, whose marriage to S.E. Bering Jr., will take place in Houston, July 2. Miss Ethel Lively and Mrs. L.F. Sanders were co-hostesses. The home was beautifully decorated with spring flowers.

Miss Dorothy Funderburk presided at the bride's book, Miss Mary Beth Loughmiller at the gift book and Misses Sue Coleman, Phyllis Fugate and Jamie Loughmiller assisted at the punch bowl. Punch, dainty cheese sandwiches and cake squares were served as the guests came and departed. Mrs. Tom Prestridge entertained with several piano numbers.

Mrs. Thelma G. Kingston, Junior High School Social Science and English teacher of Kermit and former resident of Myrtle Springs has been honored with one of her poems selected for publication in the National Poetry Anthology for 1949. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D.W. Graham of Myrtle Springs and the sister of Dan Graham, VA teacher of Edgewood.

A miscellaneous shower honoring Miss Billie Ruth Ward, bride-elect of Hubbard Richards, was given Saturday night at the home of Mrs. Johnny Hudson with Mrs. Atrice Hudson as co-hostess. Miss Norene Pontler was hostess at a kitchen shower given June 11, in Dallas, by the bride-elect's Sunday school class.

Miss Dorothy Cofer and Archie Bob Clements exchanged marriage vows Sunday, June 5, at the First Baptist Church in Grand Saline. Rev. Schoenrock read the single ring ceremony. The bride is the daughter of Mrs. G.C. Carr of Dallas, and Mr. Clements is the son of Mr. and Mrs. E.E. Clements of near Canton. The bride is a graduate of Grand Saline high school and the groom is a graduate of the local high school. The groom was released recently from the air corps and is attending Tyler Junior College. The couple will make their home in Grand Saline.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon June 20 at the Elm Grove church for Richard Alexander Lermon, who died in Fort Worth at 3:50 Saturday afternoon, June 18. Mr. Lermon, a native of Rains County, was born March 23, 1885, at Emory, son of the late Richard A. and Sarah Tillas Lermon. Rev. A.C. Arrington conducted the services, which were directed by Williams undertakers of Wills Point. Interment was in the Elm Grove Cemetery. Survivors are one sister, Mrs. W.C. Haucom of Canton, and one brother, A.L. Hermon of Delwin.

Personals: Those visiting in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Foster Sunday to honor W.S. Mills, were Merritt Mills; Mr. and Mrs. Truman Kirby and children of Dallas; Mr. and Mrs. Felton Mullins and daughter of Fort Worth; Mr. and Mrs. Julius Stagner and son of Van; J.W. Dowdle of Clifton; Mrs. Fred Covert; Jack Couch; Mr. and Mrs. Irby Mills and family and Mr. and Mrs. W.S. Mills Jr.

Miss Joan Sears and Harold Dawson exchanged marriage vows Thursday evening, June 16, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Pamplin of near Canton. Rev. Stanley of Ben Wheeler read the double ring ceremony. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Sears of Dallas and the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Pamplin. Mr. Dawson is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Dawson of near Canton. The bride is a former student of Woodrow Wilson high school, Dallas, and the groom is a former student of the local high school."
