Canton Snap Dragons bring home second in district tourney
The Canton Snap Dragons recently won second place in the Amateur Softball Association District Tournament.
The Snap Dragons are a girls T-ball team from Canton. Players are Lexi Etheridge, Makayla Mazingo, Rylee Owens, Jaycee Conway, Kenzie Jones, Laramie Woody, Landry Smith, Payton Gayle, Lila Shaw, Lily Shaw and Lexi Kinsey. Coaches are Ashley Williamson, Adam Smith, Andrea Jones and Loni Kinsey.
The Snap Dragons were drafted in March 2015 and had an undefeated season at Canton Youth Recreation Association, where they finished as co-champions.
They went on to play in the ASA District Tournament in Athens the first week in June. On June 6, the girls – ages 4 to 7 – played T-ball for eight hours straight because they had to win five games in a row to make it to the championship game. On that day, they beat the Athens Knockouts, the Whitehouse Cheetahs, the Canton Tulips, the Palestine Stix and the undefeated Whitehouse Wildcats.
As they played in the championship game (their sixth game,) they faced the Wildcats, who had only played two games that day.
According to the girls’ coaches, it became evident that the heat, sun and fatigue had taken its toll. However, all spectators and officials were impressed by the heart and stamina of the Canton Snap Dragons, they said. “These girls have no quit in them. We are so proud of them.”
