Heather Massey, a senior at Canton High School, is undergoing treatment for undifferentiated sarcoma, a cancer that grows in the soft tissue.
An anchor for the soul
Students around the county dressed in their best for the first day of school Aug. 24 while making their way to their respective classrooms, each one bright about the future and what the new school year could bring.
But for Canton High School Senior Heather Massey, 17, things would be a bit different this year.
Heather has been diagnosed with undifferentiated sarcoma, a form of cancer that forms in the body’s soft tissues.
Heather, the blonde-haired, blue and brown eyed cheerleader, is the daughter of David and Susan Massey of Canton.
Heather also has heterochromia iridium, a difference in the color of the iris’ of her eyes, and at first glance she seems a normal, high school senior looking forward to graduation.
Heather’s dark green graduation robe hangs from her parent’s living room window ready for Heather to take senior photos in, a testament to Heather and her families’ outlook to the future.
Heather recalled finding the small knot in her lower back, the day that would mark change.
“At first, I found a knot in lower, left side of my back and figured that it would go away eventually. But, after several months it was still there and I asked my parents to look at it and that is when we went and got it checked out,” said Heather.
