This week in Canton history...
CANTON HERALD, Sept. 1, 1949:
Services were held in the Primrose cemetery near Edom Sunday afternoon for Sam (Dutch) Gandy, 76, longtime resident of Van Zandt County. He was a retired farmer and had lived in Van Zandt County for 50 years. Surviving are four sons, Rube Gandy of Ben Wheeler, Roy Floyd and Burnice Gandy, Rt. 1 Chandler, three daughters, Mrs. Lloyd Rumbo, Mrs. Burl Smith and Mrs. Coy Butler of R.1 Chandler and 22 grandchildren.
The meeting to set up and adequate county organization for the purpose of Christian Rural Overseas Program (CROP) Friday morning at 9 o’clock in the assembly room of the courthouse. A. O. Loughmiller, temporary chairman of the county organization. Let’s organize that the people of the county may have the opportunity to make a contribution that starving and needy peoples may be helped.
Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Johnson celebrated her 90th birthday Sunday, Aug. 21, in the home of her daughter and son-in-law Dr. and Mrs. Erwin E. Addy, in Canton. Fifty of her eighty living descendants were present. (more on this article on microfilm)
Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Wallace of Dallas, formerly of Canton celebrated their golden wedding anniversary, Aug. 20 at the home of their daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. T. Lewis Lawler in Houston. Their nine children, fifteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren were there for a three day reunion. (more on this article on microfilm)
