This week in Canton history...
Oct. 20, 1949:
The City of Canton has taken on a “new look” so far as its streets are concerned. Commissioners Buster Brown and Eddie Guinn have just about completed oiling, asphalting and graveling about three or more miles of our streets.
We can now boost of the best streets of any town in Texas of the same size. The cost of this work to the city was very small in comparison to the total cost of the streets. Let’s take our hats off to these two gentlemen that were so willing to help Canton improve its streets. I believe that the citizens of Canton will long remember you for this good work. “A good way for the citizenship to show its appreciation for this work will be for them to pay their city taxes early so the city can pay its portion of the cost of these new streets,” said G. H. Hilliard Mayor
