Canton Herald Oct. 27, 1949:
School burglaries solved with arrest of gang operating in several states; in Canton jail. Seventeen Texas robberies were cleared last week with the arrest of two Dallas men and one from Oklahoma. The men, Donald Hunter of Oklahoma City, Joseph Roland Brown of Dallas and James A Benson of Dallas are being held in the jail in Canton charged with burglary and theft over $50. Brown and Benson are ex-convicts having served previous time in the penitentiary.
Clyde Elliott and his deputies were greatly responsible for the arrest of the men who have admitted robbery of six sewing machine heads from the Grand Saline public school on Sept. 18. Recovery of the Grand Saline machine has not been made, Sheriff Elliott told the press, but compensation is expected soon from a St. Louis buyer of these stolen machines.
They have admitted pulling robberies in Mineola, Wood County, Emory, Rains, Farmersville in Collin County, Frisco in Collin County, Pilot Point … (More of this article on microfilm)
Annual 4-H Achievement Day will be held Nov. 9 at 7:30 p. m. at the Legion Hut in Canton. All 4-H members, their parents and friends are invited.
This meeting will be held during National 4-H Achievement Week and boys and girls will be given medals they won in county competition. Girls will receive Dress Revue medals and Gold Star.
Mrs. Lee Cox and baby boy were brought home from a Dallas hospital Saturday by Hilliard and Son’s ambulance.
A county wide Bread Show being sponsored by the Van Zandt County Home Demonstration Council will be held in the assembly room of the courthouse Saturday, Oct. 29.
