Local election filing begins next week
Filing for the Canton City Council and Canton ISD school board May election runs Jan. 20 through Feb. 19.
Council
Candidate applications are available during business hours (8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday) at Canton city offices, 24980 Hwy. 64, Ste. 1, or by mail P.O. Box 245 Canton TX 75103.
Seats up for election are currently held by Cindy Malouf, Scott Perkins and Shawn Stewart.
According to the Secretary of State’s office, to be eligible to run for a council seat, a person must have been a resident of Texas for one year and a resident of Canton for six months prior to the filing date. They must also be 18 years of age and be a registered voter at the time of the election.
To be eligible for the mayor’s position, a person must have been a resident of Texas for one year, a resident of Canton for one year prior to election day, at least 18 years of age and a registered voter at the time of the election.
CISD
Those wishing to run for school board can pick up candidate packets at the CISD Administration Office, 1045 S. Buffalo, during business hours or by mail at Canton ISD, ATTN: Stacie Wilkerson, 1045 S. Buffalo St., Canton TX 75103.
Seats up for election are those currently held by T.A. Hale, Mike Malouf and Kym Phillips.
To be eligible to run for a school board position in Texas, a person must have been a resident of the state for one year and a resident of the district he or she wishes to serve in for six months prior to the filing deadline.
Additional requirements include that the person must be 18 years of age and a registered voter at the time of the election.
