CHS band director selected to music fraternity

Mike Bartley, band director at Canton High School, has been elected to membership in Phi Beta Mu, an international school bandmastery fraternity.

Phi Beta Mu is an honorary, non-political, non-profit fraternity established in 1983. There are about 350 active members in Texas with additional chapters in most of the 50 states as well as Canada, Japan and Europe.

Bartley was inducted at the annual new member’s breakfast Feb. 13 in San Antonio.

He was sponsored by Rob Toups of Canton. Co-sponsors were James Coffman of McKay Music and John Young of Wills Point High School.

In order to be considered for membership in Phi Beta Mu, one must have at least 10 years of successful teaching experience and must have produced and maintained an outstanding and consistent band program in public schools.

Bartley’s teaching experience is Owassa High School in Owassa, Okla. , from 1993 to 1996; Alma High School in Alma, Ark., from 1996 to 1999; Spearman High School from 1999 to 2000; Wills Point High School from 2000 to 2009; and CHS from 2009 to the present.
