Filing ends with only incumbents for council
School board Place 4 to have lone May race
The filing deadline for the May local election passed last week with only one race contested race for the Canton City Council and Canton ISD board of trustees.
The lone contested race will be for the Place 4 Canton ISD board of trustees post.
Julie Stern and Bill Weatherford will vie for the seat being vacated by Kym Phillips.
Phillips and Place 5 incumbent Mike Malouf did not to seek re-election.
Clay Nickles is the lone candidate for the Place 5 position.
Incumbent T.A. Hale is unopposed for the Place 3 seat.
On the council, incumbents Cindy Malouf, Scott Perkins and Shawn Stewart did not draw opponents.
This will be Stewart’s third term on the council. Malouf and Perkins will be serving their second term.
In a Facebook post after the filing deadline, Stewart, who currently serves as mayor pro tem, said he believed keeping the council intact “is a very good thing for the citizens of the city of Canton.”
“There are many great things happening right now that this current council had a major part in,” Stewart wrote. “The new city hall will be completed in a few short months. The historic downtown water tower is about to get a much-needed facelift and work on the First Monday grounds continues as the city is extending Trade Center 4. This will allow for better utilization of a prime part of our grounds as well as providing better foot traffic for vendors in that area.
“New businesses continue to be attracted to our town ... both out on the interstate as well as around town.
