This week in Canton history...
Canton Harold - April 28, 1960:
The Van Zandt County Fair Association will hold its first rodeo of the season Friday and Saturday nights, May 13 and 14. The rodeo will be held at the rodeo arena on the fairgrounds north of Highway 64 and 243 intersections. Son Lide of Wills Point will furnish the stock for the two rodeo performances.
The rodeo will include bull riding, bareback riding, calf roping, bull dogging and barrel racing. Those interested in entering the various events are asked to contact Dr. T. R. Keahey LO7- 4165 or L07-4625 or Son Lide. The rodeo arena was constructed on the fairgrounds last year and was completed in time for the Van Zandt County Fair. Several rodeos have been held in the arena and all were highly successful.
The Piggly Wiggly store is celebrating its second year in Canton this week. The store was first opened in April, 1948, in the present location and at that time it occupied only half of the building. In 1954 the store was enlarged to its present size. It is modern in every respect, having every department that is found in the larger supermarkets in the large cities. The store is managed by one of its owners, Glenn Scott. Other employees are Russell Galloway, market manager; Odell Brown, butcher, Grady Cox, butcher; Jerry Burns, assistant manager, Mrs. Laverne Hardy and Mrs. Charlie Flowers checkers; Glen Allen Scott, Mike Travis and Duane Dunn are the boys who put the groceries in your cars and give you the friendly “come back to see us” greeting. Mr. Scott believes that the friendly service and the fact that you can “get what you want” at Piggly Wiggly is the reason for the success of the store.
A tribute to Rev. And Mrs. Frank Everett will be held at the Colfax Methodist Church at 1 o’clock Sunday, May 1. Rev. Everett will be made Pastor Emeritus of the Colfax Methodist Church. This is a small way to show what his many years of faithful service means to those in this area. The public and friends are invited to the service.
