Top two grads lead class

During commencement ceremonies May 27, Emily Kate Nicks and Samantha Oakley will be leading the Canton High School Class of 2016 as valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively.

The 2016 Eagles will graduate at 7 p.m. Friday, May 27, at CHS.

Emily Kate Nicks, 18, is the daughter of Joe and Jamie Nicks. She has been a CISD student for eight years and maintained a perfect 4.0 grade point average.

Some of her school activities included playing the trumpet in band for four years (including one year as section leader, one year as band vice president and one year as drum major,) four years in the Symphonic Winds ensemble, four years in UIL One-Act Play competition (with two years as the female lead,) three years on the speech and debate team (one year as team captain,) three years on the UIL Literary Criticism team (two years as team captain,) two years on the UIL journalism team, two years in the National Honor Society (one year as NHS president,) two years in the Spanish and Interact clubs and two years in the Chess Club (one year as parliamentarian.)

She also served four years on the Student Council and served one year as student body parliamentarian.

She was in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes for one year and a member of LeadershipU for one year.

She was a three-year softball player, two-year volleyball player and one year basketball player

She served as Senior Green Day announcer.

Emily was named the 2016 Canton Rotary Young Woman of the Year and Miss CHS.
