Slight drops thwart sales tax momentum
The months of April and May each proved to be kind to Van Zandt County cities in terms of sales tax revenue collections, with modest to substantial gains being posted virtually across the board.
That positive momentum hit a bit of a stumbling block in June, with the office of Texas State Comptroller Glenn Hegar releasing figures showing that only Van and Edom showed positive gains, while Canton, Edgewood, Grand Saline and Wills Point all saw their numbers dip when comparing monthly figures against those posted in 2015.
The city of Van helped to lead the way for Van Zandt County in an otherwise down month, receiving a payment of $51,882.22 in June 2016. That total was $1,025.48, or 2.02 percent, higher than the $50,856.74 received for the same calendar month in 2015.
Edom also enjoyed a solid month, posting a gain of 6.51 percent or $81.16 over the $1,246.08.
Wills Point narrowly missed being on the positive side of the ledger, showing a narrow drop of just $1,141.79 or 1.37 percent from the $83,510.63 collected when comparing against the same calendar month in 2015.
Canton also came close to matching its dollar total from June 2015, receiving a payment of $273,351.22 in June 2016.
The city of Edgewood saw its totals drop $3,042, or 15.34 percent, from the $19,825 received for June 2015.
