VFW sponsors essay scholarship contest

The Canton Veterans of Foreign Wars and their Veterans Auxiliary of Post 9171 are once giving local schools a chance to enter the national essay competition.

“This is a chance to offer students a head start on their lives,” said spokesperson Diane Farmers. “It also is an opportunity for the junior high and high school students to voice their opinions on patriotism, American history and democratic ideas and principles.”

The contest is open to all students in public, private or parochial schools or pursuing home study.

The essay for students in grades six through eight is called the Patriot's Pen. This year’s theme is "The America I Believe In."

The Voice of America contest in grades nine through 12. The theme for this year is "My Responsibility to America."

“Essay forms, with all entry information, are being placed at area schools this week, and we hope to have many students take the opportunity to be a local, district, state and national winner,” Farmers said.
