Underage driver leads midnight chase
An underage driver took officers of the Canton Police Department on a high speed albeit quick chase through Canton Sept. 15.
From Cherry Street to Peace Street, the 16-year-old driver took police officers on a chase through the streets of downtown Canton, and even went through the Brookshires and Walmart parking lots.
According to police reports, at 12:22 a.m. a CPD officer observed a 2016 black Hyundai sedan traveling west on Highway 243. After activating radar, the officer observed a reading of 82 MPH in a 50 MPH zone and attempted to signal a traffic stop with emergency lights on Cherry Street in front of Canton High School.
The report indicated that the vehicle picked up speed after the lights were activated. The officer was then in pursuit at high speeds down Cherry Street onto College Street, traveling south.
During that time, the report indicated that the vehicle turned its lights off and was driving reckless down College Street at a high rate of speed. The driver then ran a stop sign at the intersection of College and Big Rock streets. From there, the driver turned left onto Athens and then onto Tyler Street. The vehicle continued on Tyler Street, crossing Main Street and then into the lot of Live Oak and Tyler streets and then east on Peace Street.
