Dylan Cox finished with 116 rushing yards and a touchdown in Friday night’s 41-21 loss to Aubrey.
The Canton Eagles carried the banner for Van Zandt County football teams in 2015, finishing as the only local team to win a bi-district title. As one of four county playoff qualifiers this season, the Eagles looked to make it two consecutive bi-district round wins during a showdown with District 5-4A runner-up Aubrey at E.H. Hanby Stadium in Mesquite Nov. 11.
Despite some great individual efforts, Canton could not slow down Aubrey’s big play offense enough in what eventually turned into a season ending 41-21 loss to the Chaparrals.
The Eagles began Friday night on offense, netting just five yards on a Hunter Moore scramble before being forced to punt the ball to the Chaparrals.
Aubrey’s opening drive proved to be more successful, with the combined rushing efforts of Grayson Grisso and Sheldon Wingert leading to a Chaparral touchdown. Grisso began the drive with back-to-back rushes totaling 11 yards before Wingert set off the scoring with a 68-yard touchdown run. Gene McCutchin added the PAT, pushing Aubrey to a 7-0 lead with 9:27 to play.
Canton drew even less than 13 seconds later, getting an electrifying 58-yard touchdown run on the first play of their second drive courtesy of Dylan Cox to pull to within 7-6. Justin Jenkins added the PAT, tying the score at 7-7 with 9:14 to play in the opening quarter.
