You can’t always get what you want
Every time we have an election in Van Zandt County we open up the doors of our Canton Herald office and invite anyone to come in, eat pizza, visit and follow the returns as we cover the story. Nov. 8 was no exception. We had a great group here on election night consisting of elected officials, candidates and concerned citizens as we watched the presidential returns and made periodic trips to the courthouse to update our local returns. As it turned out, there were a few big surprises.
President / Vice President, House and Senate
Many of us in the office were hopeful of Trump’s chances of winning the election, but we were all prepared to see the Clintons move into the White House in January. Fortunately, things didn’t turn out in her favor and republicans all over this country can be proud of the job they did, especially in rural America. It was no big surprise that 85 percent of voters in Van Zandt County voted for the Trump / Pence ticket. Our country was at a clear tipping point leading up to this election and republicans ended up winning the trifecta with control over the House and a majority in the U.S. Senate for at least for the next two years. Many Clinton voters were not happy with the results as they had already been preparing for a certain win. In the days that followed the election, Clinton supporters have been dealing with the reality of their loss and dealing with an outcome nobody expected.
