Canton Herald, Dec. 1, 1960:

  Cut over to Southwestern States the Telephone Companies Jackson, Myrtle Springs and Oakland exchanges failed to take place Tuesday as previously announced because of damage to telephone cables  by county bird hunters.

Mrs. Margaret Myers told the Canton Herald, Wednesday afternoon that her company and then her company did not know “exactly when” the three new substations to the Canton exchanged will be used by local patrons.

R. C. Hadley local manager for the company has been troubleshooting along with special telephone crews in the trouble is expected to be ironed out in the near future. Rural telephones around Canton came as a result of the concentrated efforts of the Van Zandt County Farm Bureau, civic clubs and individuals in the rural area.

Funeral services for William Riley Snow, 77, Route 2 Ben Wheeler, were held at the Mount Pisgah Baptist church November 16 with Rev. McWilliams paying the last tribute.  Mrs. Snow was born August 2, 1883, in Kaufman County the son of William and Kate Lane Snow. He was married to Edna Olena Fryer in 1906 in Grand Saline.

Funeral services for Franklin Pierce Blasingame, 81, were conducted at Eubank funeral Chapel in Canton Tuesday afternoon at 3 o’clock with Rev. A. L. Cates of Edgewood reading the last rites. Mr. Blasingame  passed away in Baytown November 27. He was married to Beulah Kennedy on June 15, 1902, and to this union seven children were born all of them survive. Interment was at Edgewood Cemetery under the direction of Eubank Funeral Home.
