Getting ready for winter
It’s late January, the high temperature today will be 70 degrees, and our topic is getting ready for winter. Perhaps we will have a couple months of cold weather, perhaps not. If we do, let’s get ready for it!
How deep in the ground are your water pipes? When the ground surface freezes, the cold penetrates the ground. Eventually it will get deep enough to freeze your water pipes. We all know about keeping a little water running through the pipes to prevent them from freezing. To be on the safe side, start the water when the outdoor temperature is forecast to be freezing.
How long should you let the water run? It depends on how long it stays below freezing and how deep your water pipes are. Ours are a foot deep. We dribble the water for twice as long as the weather stays below freezing.
By the way, drink plenty of water. It’s easy to get dehydrated in winter. No one expects to get dehydrated in winter, so we never think about it.
