This Week in Canton History

Feb. 2, 1961:

Canton paid out a total of $348 to the Tyler Telethon Saturday night and Sunday, according to one of the committee members from the Canton Lions Club. This total added to the $321 received by the Mothers March Dimes will give the city and surrounding area a total of $669 contributed to the March of Dimes. The Canton Lions Club is expected to complete a canvas of the business houses in town to swell the funds even more. Jake Slaughter is the local drive chairman with Superintendent Norris Birdwell and Lester Slayton serving on the Lions Club Drive.  Members of the Lions Club answered the phones for the telethon.
The Canton girls down the Winnsboro team for the second time last Thursday night by the score of 53 to 41. Kay Douglas led the Eagles with 24 points. Jane Groves score a total of 16 points while Joyce Engledow followed with 13. The opponents leading scorer was Maureen Dean who tallied 22 points. The high school girls need to bring home one more win with the Raiderettes to clinch district.
“Nice texture, poor texture, even Brown, too Brown, uniform size” were some of the remarks heard at the Bread Show Friday, in the assembly room at the Courthouse in Canton.
The event was sponsored by the Van Zandt County Home Demonstration Council. Ladies of the club judged some 29 entries of rolls, Swedish tea rings, plain loaves, apple-coffee cake, and raisin muffins. They gave both constructive criticism and good points about these products.
