The Canton Eagles were scheduled to finish the regular season with games against Wills Point, Emory Rains and Mabank.
The Canton Eagles made the turn towards the homestretch of the 2016-’17 regular season last week, beginning the second round of District 13-4A play with games against Van and Brownsboro.
Canton began its week on the road, heading to Van Jan. 31 for a date with the rival Vandals. The Eagles struggled to complete the season sweep against Van, falling behind in the second quarter and never recovering in a 54-40 loss.
Neither team could get a leg up on the other in the first quarter as Canton and Van each scored 14 points in the game's opening eight minutes.
Van began to get separation from the Eagles in the second, relying on a strong defensive effort to take a 10-point advantage into the half.
After each team scored 12 points in the fourth quarter, Van found another gear late to close out the game on a 14-10 run.
Leading scorers for Van included Holden Myers with 18, Zanden Worley with 16, Hunter Hutchins with 12, Isaiah Allred with four, and Sam Reeves and Bray Doring with two each.
