Stewart, Odic push for plan approval

The Canton city council heard from three councilmembers regarding personal requests during the city council meeting Feb. 21.

Councilman Shawn Stewart asked the council to consider a plan regarding the Canton Animal Shelter, Councilwoman Connie Odic presented a plan to have the city’s tennis courts resurfaced and Councilwoman Cindy Malouf asked for information on grants for housing renovations.

Councilman Shawn Stewart requested a discussion on waiving adopting and spay/neuter fees for the Canton Animal Shelter.

Stewart said that his intent was to “take the fees that we receive from the three cities that participate in our animal surrendering program and set up a program with local vets for cats and dogs adopted out our shelter and have that animal spayed or neutered for free. Another intent would be to move as many animals out of the shelter as we can alive, as opposed to other alternatives.”

Stewart said his recommendation was not to waive adopting fees but to pay for all spay/neuters up to a maximum amount of $15,000 three times during the year to promote adoption.
