Gilmer sentenced to 30 years

Joe Marlin Gilmer, 59, of Canton, was recently sentenced to 30 years in prison for the aggravated assault of Charles “Lindy” Lawler, 89.

Gilmer’s conviction and sentence stemmed from an assault that occurred on March 16, 2015, when the Canton Police Department responded to Lawler’s home around noon and found that Lawler had been struck in the back of the head with a 1” x 4” board.

Lawler explained to officers that Gilmer, his wife’s son, arrived at his home while he was working the garage and began to verbally berate Lawler regarding financial and property issues.

The confrontation subsequently erupted into Gilmer becoming physically violent as he threw a brick at Lawler, chased him with a garden hoe, and struck him in the back of the head with a board.
