March 30, 1961
Two tornados struck the Canton area Sunday night and over $13,500 in damage was reported, according to a report George Reese, Highway Patrol. A tornado totally demolished the C. B. Cason home six miles east of Edom on Highway 64. The loss was approximately approximated at $10,000. Mr. and Mrs. Cason and four children were in the house at the time but none was hurt. The storm tore down power lines and uprooted trees. Two trees fell across the highway and the highway department was called to clear the debris. The other tornado was cited about 15 miles south of Canton in the Denman community Sunday night. It struck the Sherman Phillips residence and outbuildings doing about $2,000 in damage. It also struck the Carl Mewbourn home and outbuildings (mostly to the barn) doing about $1,500 damage. The storm struck at approximately 9:15 p.m.
This and That – Bobby Sanders, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. F. Sanders, has been awarded a “National Science Fellowship.” Bobby is a student professor in the University of Florida.
