March of Remembrance set for April 23
Christians from across the county will gather Sunday April 23, in Canton for the 2017 Van Zandt County March of Remembrance honoring survivors of the Holocaust. The event will begin with a brief assembly at 1:30 p.m. on the east steps of the Van Zandt County Courthouse.
County Judge Don Kirkpatrick will welcome those participating in the march. Immediately following his remarks, the march will begin from the courthouse along Hwy 19 to the Farm Bureau building near the intersection of Hwys 19 and 243.
At 2:30 p.m., there will be a program in the Farm Building meeting room. Alexandra Goode, who as a teenager survived Dachau concentration camp in Germany, will be one of the very special guests in attendance again this year. Joining her will be Canton resident, Rose Scott, who as a teenager survived interrogations and torture by the Gestapo in Vienna, Austria during WWII. Many read of some of Rose’s experiences in a series of articles in the Van Zandt News earlier this year. Another special guest and speaker will be Rabbi Michael Wallace of Adonai Yemaleh Zoht Messianic Synagogue in Tyler.
This marks the 10th year that the annual march has been held in Canton. The public is invited to participate in the event remembering the 11 million victims of the Holocaust, and honoring those who survived. “As Christians, we are standing with our Jewish friends and neighbors,” said Gary Vawter, event coordinator. “Together we are saying never again will the church remain silent in the face of anti-Semitism. Unfortunately, the threat is very real right here in Texas. Recent attacks in Dallas and Houston have occurred damaging Jewish community centers and synagogues, and vandalism of Jewish cemeteries has taken place.”
