Wills Point, county gun range agreement pursued

Van Zandt County Commissioners authorized the VZC Sheriff’s Department to pursue an interlocal agreement with the City of Wills Point on a piece of property to be used for a gun range that is currently owned by the city June 13.

Officers from the sheriff’s department, Wills Point City Manager Pam Pearson and VZC commissioners thoroughly discussed the agreement.

“We stopped using this gun range for a while,” pointed out VZC Judge Don Kirkpatrick. “The City of Wills Point has said that the sheriff’s office could use that property for qualifying.”

A representative from the VZC Sheriff’s Department said that the property is not just for their personnel to use but that it would be available for any law enforcement agency in the county.

“My opinion is that we have been down this road and I am not interested in pursuing this property for the county,” said Kirkpatrick. “I appreciate the offer from the City of Wills Point. It is a generous offer. I think we need to look elsewhere.”

VZC Pct. 3 Commissioner Keith Pearson suggested the idea of an interlocal agreement between the county and the City of Wills Point to use the facility for a gun range.
