This week in Canton History...

July 20, 1961

Official announcement was made Tuesday of the purchase of L & W Chevrolet Company of Canton to Mark Culwell, formerly of Corsicana. The sale of the Chevrolet firm was effective July 15 and Mr. Culwell assumed active management at that date.

The new owner told the press that the personnel now employed with the firm will remain under the change.

Culwell, a former football coach of Corsicana, was employed by Maco Motor Co. of Corsicana prior to moving to Canton. He has also coached in Longview and Robstown. Culwell is married with three children and they have moved to the Whispering Oaks Sub-Division in Canton.

Last Rites: Edgewood(spl)-Benny F. Newman, businessman and lifelong resident of Edgewood, died unexpectedly here Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. Death was attributed to a heart attack. Services were held at Cheatham Memorial Methodist Church at Edgewood. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery here under direction of Newman Funeral Home.
