He was born June 9, 1927, near Abilene to Karl D. and Nancy Melissa Stewart Dove. After graduating from Van High School, he moved to Dallas and worked at North American Aviation. He joined the Navy at age 18 and served stateside until the end of World War II. After the war, he returned to Van Zandt County where he lived the rest of his life. He joined his father in the construction business and later owned a construction company with his brother. They built houses throughout the East Texas area until his retirement in the early 1980s. He was also a rancher who raised beef cattle, both Hereford and Pinzgauer, for many years.

He was involved in his community. A life-long Presbyterian, he was both an elder and a Sunday school teacher. He was a longtime member of the Van Independent School District School Board. He was active in the Van Zandt County Farm Bureau and was named Canton Chamber of Commerce Agriculturist of the Year in 2014.

He enjoyed hunting, reading and woodworking. His great pleasure, however, came from working on his farm.

He is survived by his wife; children, Kathy and Steve Bufkin of Carrollton, Donna Bell of Lewisville, Marsha and Bill Hasson of Coppell, and James and Mary Lou Dove of Colleyville; grandchildren, Chase and Drew Hasson, Emily Bufkin, Brett Bell, and Ashley Dove and Christina Dove.
