Peak programs offered at VZC Library
Things are busy around the Van Zandt County Library this fall. There are three programs this week that will peak the interest of many.
At 10:30 a.m., Sept. 21, there is another program in the Van Zandt County Library Series sponsored by the Free State Master Gardeners. This program covers vermiculture/composting. Vermiculture is the process of cultivating worms to breakdown organic waste. This along with the compost will make the gardening soil richer and more productive.
Storytime has resumed for the fall; and at 10 a.m., Friday, Sept. 22, Ms. Rhonda will be reading stories about trucks to the preschoolers. A craft project will follow.
The Van Zandt County Genealogy Society will hold their annual seminar at St. Therese Catholic Church from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 23. The featured speaker is John Sellers, a native of Hopkins County and graduate of Texas Tech. This seminar covers many of the aspects of genealogy and will be beneficial to those who enjoy research of family history.
The Friends of the Library met Sept. 11. The meeting was conducted by Vice President Billie Jean Cole. Old business included the FOL joining the Chamber of Commerce to better publicize its work and attract new members.
An important upcoming event is a joint effort with the Canton Museum Board. The FOL will provide a bounce house for the children along with the popular Book Fair. Great values can be found in books, videos, DVDs and CDs. The Museum Board will conduct tours of the Blackwell House and provide ice cream. This will take place Oct. 6 and 7. More details will follow.
Next month's meeting will feature the Canton Herald's own Britne Hammons. This meeting will be Oct. 9.
The FOL has received several memorial donations from Mary Kyser, in memory of Milton Kyser; Roy and Nancy Akins, in memory of Don Davis; Dr. John and Barbara Turner, in memory of Don Davis; Henry and Martha Lewis, in memory of Red Montgomery, and the Heritage Park Museum, in memory of Dolly Greebon, Hazel McEnturff, Sally Pickings and Jerry Don Erwin.
Library hours are 10 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, and noon to 8 p.m., Saturday. Check the library web-site www.vanzandtlibrary.org for more information about up-coming events.
