Canton Autumn Festival set for Saturday

Driving throughout downtown Canton, one might notice that a few scarecrows have thrown a lawn party or that the crows will have something to crow about during the Canton Main Street Autumn Festival to be held from noon to 6 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 14.

The family-friendly, downtown street festival on North/South Buffalo and East/West Tyler Streets will feature arts and crafts vendors, food vendors, live music and entertainment, silent auction, raffle drawing, sidewalk sales in downtown businesses, a special kid’s area with activities, cake walk, mum sale, pumpkin decorating contest and a dunk tank. “Opportunities are still available for sponsors and vendors. Those interested should contact the Canton Main Street office at 903-567-1849 as soon as possible,” said Tam Erwin, program manager of Canton Main Street.

to this year’s festival is a mum sale and pumpkin decorating contest. Cost for the mums is $16. The will come in 12-inch pots and will be available in assorted colors. All mums will be avilable for pickup at the festival. To order a mum, call Canton Main Street at 903-567-1849. The Pumpkin Decorating Contest is now open to all ages and can include any size pumpkin. The theme this year is “Decorate a Pumpkin that looks like a Van Zandt County Commissioner.” The entry fee for the pumpkin decorating contest is $2 per entry. Entries can be turned in between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Judging will be at 5 p.m. with the winner announced as soon as judging is over. There is a cash prize for best pumpkin. Entry forms can be picked up at the Canton Main Street office.

kid’s area will feature bounce houses, arts and crafts that the children can take home, face painting, several games with prizes and paint graffiti on a car. Kids’ Area entry is $5 per child and includes all activities.

According to Erwin, “profits from the Autumn Festival is used to fund restoration, beautification and promotional projects for the historic downtown district. Canton was selected by the Texas Historical Commission to participate in the Texas Main Street Program in 2001 and has received national recognition for its success.”
