This Week in Canton History

CANTON HERALD, October 12, 1961: Van Zandt County Home Demonstration Club women are planning “to get acquainted with our neighbors” as they meet for Achievement Day Oct. 27 in the Board-Elwood Community Center. Final plans were made for this event at the October Council meeting with Mrs. J. R. Cotton in charge.

Three ladies from the County have entered dresses in the State Fair and will participate in this Style Show in the Women’s Building on October 14 at 11 a.m. They are Mrs. J. The. Lewis and Mrs. B. A. Fenter of the Van Club and Mrs. Doris Burns of the extension staff in Canton.

Miss Almond Flippo again urged attendance at the Home Management meetings Oct. 17, 24, 31 and Nov. 3 at 7:30 p.m. in the assembly room of the courthouse. She also announced the following leader training meeting: Homestead, Oct. 20 and Foods Nov. 3 at 1:30 p. m. Mrs. Lloyd Briley announced that the week of Oct. 8 had been proclaimed Fire Prevention and Clean-up in the County by Judge Truitt Mayo.

Dorisene Pierce, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Pierce, was one of the 27 women initiated by Gamma Phi Beta National Sorority, Sunday, Oct. 1, at East Texas State College.

Miss Janet Whitaker and Jimmy Don Whatley were married in Myrtle Springs, Friday, Sept. 29, Rev. E. C. Wann read the vowels. Mrs. Whatley is the daughter of Mrs. F. G. Whitaker of Canton and Mr. Whatley is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Leon Whatley of Grand Saline. The couple is at home in Grand Saline.

THIS and THAT-Mrs. Angus Travis, who is evidently getting a kick out of teaching the youngsters in Canton’s grade school, reported a cute incident that happened in her class to her husband, Angus Travis and he gave it to us.. Mrs. Travis was deep in discussion with her class on a daily health lesson… and she asked for the 3 types of tissues… A little girl from the rear of the room answered, “Face tissue, Hand tissue and toilet tissue,”… We figured that the teacher should not have graded it wrong, and we doubt if she did…

Russell Priest reports a special horse sale will be held at the Canton Commission Company Barn on Saturday night, October 21… He said that they are expecting some 200 head of horses to be consigned to the barn for sale.
